Blueberry Martini

  • 2 oz vodka
  • oz blueberry simple syrup
  • 1 oz  fresh lemon juice
  • fresh blueberries for garnish
  • Fresh lemon slices for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a cocktail shaker, add vodka, blueberry simple syrup, and lemon juice. Fill the remainder of the shaker with ice. Shake vigorously.
  2. Double strain into a chilled martini glass.
  3. Add fresh blueberries and garnish with a lemon slice. Repeat for each cocktail.

Notes

  • Shake well. A martini needs to be ice cold, so use lots of ice in a cocktail shaker and really shake this drink. I like to shake it until the outside of the shaker is frosty. 
  • Double strain. Double straining means means first pouring the drink through the strainer attached to the cocktail shaker, as well as through a second strainer, like a fine mesh strainer or a Hawthorne strainer  A good martini is ultra smooth, and double straining ensures that no flakes of ice or bits of fruit pulp end up in the martini glass. I use a small fine mesh strainer with a conical shape that's made for cocktails. You can also use a tea strainer.
  • Blueberry syrup. Blueberry simple syrup is very easy to make and has lots of other uses. My recipe is simply blueberries added to equal parts sugar and water. However, you can use blueberry juice instead.
  • Liqueur. Although I love the combination of blueberry and lemon, you can use an orange liqueur instead of the lemon juice. Triple sec, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier are all good options.
  • Chill your glasses. I like to chill the martini glasses in the freezer before serving. Frosty glasses make for an extra cold and refreshing cocktail.
  • Sugar rim. I find that the blueberries lend just the right amount of sweetness to this cocktail, but if you like you can give the martini glasses a sugar rim.
  • Mocktails. Make a mocktail by omitting the vodka. You can top up the glass with soda water. 
  • Big Batch. Make a big batch of this delicious cocktail and serve it from a large pitcher. Since you won't be shaking the large batch with ice, start with cold ingredients and chill for several hours in the fridge. Give the pitcher a good stir with a cocktail stick before serving.
