Brandy Mulled Wine Recipe
Description
This Brandy Mulled Wine Recipe uses two bottles of red wine combined with apple juice, brandy, maple syrup, and sliced orange. Aromatic spices including cinnamon sticks, black peppercorns, cloves, and star anise are simmered with the liquid to impart deep warmth and complexity. The heat is reduced once steam appears, and the wine simmers for 15 minutes to fully infuse the spices.
The mulled wine is strained before serving into mugs or thick-walled glasses to remove solids. Optional garnishes like orange slices, cinnamon sticks, star anise, and cranberries can be added for visual appeal and additional scent.
Inexpensive wines such as merlot or cabernet sauvignon are recommended to avoid high costs. Maple syrup can be swapped for coconut or brown sugar depending on preference. Leftover mulled wine can be refrigerated for several days and reheated gently or enjoyed cold. Straining with a fine mesh or using cheesecloth for spices facilitates cleanup.
Ingredients
- 2 bottles red wine see notes
- 1 cup apple juice
- 1 cup brandy
- ½ cup maple syrup see notes
- 1 orange sliced with the skin on
- 4 cinnamon stick plus extra for garnish
- 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
- 1 teaspoon clove whole
- 6 star anise whole
- orange optional garnishes; orange sliced
- cinnamon stick
- star anise
- Cranberry
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients to a large pot over medium-high heat. As soon as you start to see steam rising from the pot, reduce the heat to medium. Keep the pot on the heat for 15 minutes for the spices to infuse the wine.
- Strain the mulled wine into mugs or thick-walled wine glasses and top with any or all of the optional garnishes.
Notes
- Use an inexpensive merlot or cabernet sauvignon; high-priced wine is unnecessary.
- Coconut sugar or brown sugar can replace maple syrup if preferred.
- Leftovers can be stored refrigerated with spices strained out and reheated or served cold.
- Pour mulled wine through a fine mesh strainer when serving to reduce sediment; alternatively, tie spices in cheesecloth before simmering for easier removal.
