Brazilian Lemonade Recipe (Limeade)
Description
Brazilian Lemonade Recipe (Limeade) starts by washing and cutting limes into eighths, keeping peel on but removing seeds. These are quickly blended with ice water, granulated sugar, and ice cubes just a few pulses to avoid bitterness from over-blending the peel.
The mixture is strained through a fine mesh to remove the pulp and peel solids, producing a smooth citrus drink. For a creamy sweetness, sweetened condensed milk may be stirred in, or it can be left out for a traditional limeade. Variations include blending in fresh mint leaves or adding spirits like cachaça, vodka, or rum for a cocktail version.
This beverage is best served immediately over ice with lime wedges for garnish. It has a fresh tartness balanced by sugar and optional creamy notes.
Leftovers should be stored in the refrigerator covered and consumed within one day to avoid developing bitterness. Stir in extra sugar before serving leftover limeade, or freeze it as popsicles keeping in mind the frozen version may taste more bitter.
Ingredients
- 3 lime washed, cut into ⅛ths, and seeds removed, skin on. Use extra lime slices to garnish the drink!
- 5 cups water ice
- 1 cup granulated sugar or more if desired
- ice cubes
- ½ cup sweetened condensed milk OPTIONAL
Instructions
- To start, wash limes, scrubbing well, to remove dirt, outer wax, and pesticides.
- Then, cut limes into ⅛ths or thin wedges. Place them in a blender or food processor with ice water, sugar, and ice cubes.
- Blend quickly (pulse about 5 to 7 times). If you blend for longer, this will make your lemonade bitter!
- Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer and press the lime pulp gently to release its extra juice. Discard the limes skins and pulps!
- Serve Brazilian lemonade in a pitcher with lots of ice and lime wedges. If you want to, stir in condensed milk to make a sweeter and creamy lemonade. It’s up to you! To make it dairy-free, replace it with coconut milk.
- For a variation of the recipe, you may add fresh mint leaves and blend with the other ingredients. For an alcoholic version, stir in some cachaça, vodka, or white rum.
- Brazilian limeade is meant to be consumed immediately because it has the tendency to get bitter over time. But if you have leftovers, you may store them covered in the fridge for up to one day. Make sure to add extra sugar and stir well before drinking leftovers.
- Some freeze this classic Brazilian drink in popsicle molds but I find it to be bitter!
Notes
- Use thoroughly washed limes to remove dirt and pesticides before blending.
- Pulse blend the limes briefly to prevent bitterness from over-blending the peel.
- Strain the mixture well to remove all pulp and peel for a smooth drink.
- Leftover lemonade should be stored covered in the refrigerator and consumed within one day.
- Stir in additional sugar before drinking leftover lemonade to balance tartness.
- Freezing as popsicles is possible but may increase bitterness.
