Candied Orange Slices

Easy candied citrus slices made with three ingredients. This simple recipe for homemade citrus slice makes for a tart snack, a zesty make ahead food gift or a beautiful decorative topping to desserts.

  • 2 medium sized oranges cut into ¼" or .5cm slices
  • 1 cup granulated sugar or caster sugar
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Add the water and sugar to a saucepan over a medium heat and stir to combine. The sugar won't immediately dissolve, so the water will be cloudy.
  2. Carefully add the orange slices into the water and continue cooking on a medium heat turning the slices occasionally with tongs. Bring the pan to a boil.
  3. Once boiling, turn the heat down slightly to a medium low and continue to cook for about 10 minutes. Turn the slices once or twice in this time. You are looking for the pieces to be soft and the whites of the rind to have become somewhat translucent on both sides of the slices. But you don't want the slices to be falling apart. Specific timings will depend on the sizes of the slices and the type of oranges used.
  4. Carefully remove the slices from the pan with tongs and place on a sheet of parchment paper to dry overnight.

Notes

  • The key to this recipe is a simple syrup of equal parts sugar and water. Dependent on the size of your pan, you may find that you need to use extra water and sugar to make for a bath for the orange slices. You want these to fit in the pan, without being so packed in that they are touching the bottom.
