Cheese Saganaki: Fried Feta Cheese

Cheese Saganaki consists of thick slices of feta cheese coated with flour, egg, and sesame seeds before being fried until golden. The result is a crunchy, toasted exterior with a soft and slightly melted feta inside. Served hot, it is traditionally enjoyed with a drizzle of honey, combining salty and sweet flavors.

Description

This fried feta cheese dish uses 2-3 cm thick slices that are first dusted with seasoned flour, then dipped in beaten egg, and finally coated with sesame seeds. Frying in moderate sunflower oil brings a crisp golden crust from the sesame while warming the cheese so it softens but retains shape. Careful temperature control is important to avoid burning the sesame or overheating the cheese so that it melts properly inside.

The finished Cheese Saganaki pairs well with honey which adds a contrasting sweetness to the salty feta. The texture combines crunchy sesame and crispy fried coating with creamy, tangy cheese inside, making it a distinctive appetizer or snack.

Serving immediately after frying is best to enjoy the contrast between hot interior and crisp crust.
