Chocolate con Leche [Video + Recipe] Hot Chocolate Dominicano

Chocolate con Leche is a Dominican-style hot chocolate made with evaporated milk, spices like cloves and cinnamon, and unsweetened chocolate or cocoa powder. It thickens slightly with cornstarch while simmering gently, resulting in a creamy, spiced beverage that balances rich chocolate flavor with warmth from ginger and cloves.

Description

This Dominican hot chocolate uses evaporated milk as its base, combined with key spices including cloves, cinnamon, and fresh ginger slices. The addition of cornstarch helps thicken the mixture during simmering, creating a velvety texture that sets it apart from thinner cocoa drinks. Unsweetened chocolate or cocoa powder provides deep chocolate intensity, balanced by the moderate sweetness from granulated sugar and a pinch of salt to enhance flavors.

The method involves whisking all ingredients together and gently heating over low heat while stirring constantly to dissolve the chocolate and prevent scorching. The drink thickens after about 10 minutes, reaching a smooth consistency suitable for serving warm.

Chocolate con Leche is ideal as a comforting beverage during cooler weather or as part of a breakfast or dessert occasion. It can be enjoyed straight from the mug, capturing a balance of sweet, spice, and creamy chocolate without additional toppings.
