Cupcakes:

  • 1 (13-ounce) Box Devil's Food Cake Mix
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • ¾ cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla

Frosting:

  • ¾ cup softened butter
  • 4 ounces softened cream cheese
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¾ cup flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2-3 cups powdered sugar
  • milk, as needed for consistency
  • cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a medium bowl whisk 1 (13-ounce) box devil's food cake mix, 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, and 1 teaspoon baking powder. In a second larger bowl, combine ½ cup vegetable oil, 3 eggs, ¾ cup buttermilk, ¾ cup greek yogurt, and 1 tablespoon vanilla and mix well.
  3. Add the cake mix mixture to the oil and eggs mixture and whisk until mostly smooth (a few little lumps are okay).
  4. Fill the cupcake liners ⅔ full and bake for 19-22 minutes. Remove the cupcakes from the oven and let them cool completely.
  5. While the cupcakes are cooling prepare the frosting. In a medium bowl whisk the ¾ cup softened butter, 4 ounces softened cream cheese, and ¾ cup brown sugar for 2-3 minutes until creamy and fluffy.
  6. Add the ¾ cup flour, ½ teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon vanilla and mix well. mix in the 2-3 cups powdered sugar 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add milk, 1 tablespoon at a time if need to thin to the desired consistency.
  7. Stir in the ⅓ cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips then spread the frosting on cooled cupcakes.
