Chocolate Protein Shake (Protein Powder-Free!)
Description
The shake relies on wholesome ingredients like frozen banana for creaminess and sweetness, hemp seeds and chia seeds for protein and fiber, gluten-free oats for texture and sustenance, and peanut (or other nut) butter for richness and a nutty note. Cacao powder adds the chocolate intensity without sugar, and almond milk thins the consistency to drinkable levels. Dates or maple syrup can optionally sweeten the shake further.
Blending these ingredients at high speed results in a smooth and creamy texture with balanced flavors from nut butter and cacao, alongside healthy fats and protein. The shake is immediately drinkable or can be refrigerated for a short time but is best fresh.
It can be consumed as a filling breakfast, post-workout drink, or protein-packed snack. Options for freeze storage are available if desired.
Frozen banana and seeds contribute to the shake’s thick texture and nutritional profile, making it a wholesome alternative to protein powders.
Ingredients
- 1 ripe banana (peeled and frozen)
- 2 Tbsp hemp seeds
- 1/4 cup gluten-free oats
- 2 Tbsp peanut butter or sub almond butter, cashew butter, or seed butter of choice, natural salted
- 1 Tbsp chia seeds
- 1 - 2 Tbsp cacao powder (to taste)
- 1 ½ - 2 cups almond milk unsweetened
- 1 - 2 pitted dates to sweeten // optional, or maple syrup
Instructions
- To a high-speed blender, add banana, hemp seeds, oats, peanut butter (or other nut or seed butter), chia seeds, cacao powder, and almond milk (starting with lesser end of range) and blend on high until creamy and smooth, scraping down sides as needed.
- Taste and adjust flavor as needed, adding more cacao powder for chocolate flavor, nut butter for creaminess or saltiness, almond milk to thin, or dates or maple syrup to sweeten (optional).
- Enjoy immediately, or store covered in the refrigerator up to 1 day (though best when fresh). See notes for freezing options*.
Notes
- Substitute additional chia and flaxseed meal for hemp seeds if digestion is an issue.
- Oat-free version: replace oats with more hemp and chia seeds.
- Leftover shakes can be frozen in popsicle or ice cube molds and kept for up to one month.
