Christmas Sangria
Description
The Christmas Sangria recipe blends cranberries, orange slices, apple and pear wedges, muddled to release fresh fruit juices and aromatic flavors, combined with Tempranillo red wine. Refrigerating the mixture overnight allows the fruits to infuse the wine with wintery notes. Just before serving, chilled club soda or tonic water is stirred in to add effervescence and lighten the drink. This method emphasizes the balance between fruity sweetness, tartness from cranberries, and the wine’s depth.
It is designed to be served cold, making it refreshing during holiday celebrations. The muddled fruits provide not only flavor but also a textural element you can enjoy by nibbling the wine-soaked pieces. Optional variations include using other seasonal fruits or adding spirits like orange-flavored Cointreau for extra complexity, as well as creating a non-alcoholic version with cranberry juice and sparkling soda.
Storage tips advise serving sangria chilled and suggest removing fruit if storing for more than a couple of days to maintain quality. The recipe also recommends preparing multiple batches in advance for parties and provides guidance on muddling to avoid over-extraction of tannins that can sour the drink.
Ingredients
- 6 ounces cranberries rinsed
- 1 orange sliced
- 1 apple cored and cut into thin wedges
- 1 pear cored and cut into thin wedges
- 2 red wine recommend Tempranillo, bottles
- 1 liter club soda chilled, or tonic water
Instructions

- Add the orange, apple and pear slices and muddle.
- Pour in the wine and stir. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
- Before serving, stir in tonic water or club soda. Serve cold.
Notes
- Select winter seasonal fruits like citrus, apples, pears, and berries for authentic Christmas sangria flavor.
- Muddle fruits gently to avoid releasing excessive tannins that can cause bitterness and cloudiness.
- For a stronger drink, add orange-flavored liqueurs such as Cointreau.
- A non-alcoholic version can be made with non-alcoholic red wine or cranberry juice with sparkling soda.
- Serve chilled, optionally nestling the punch bowl in an ice bath or adding frozen fruit as edible ice cubes.
- Store sangria in the refrigerator up to 2 days; remove fruit for longer storage up to 5 days.
- Expect about 1–2 drinks per guest per hour when serving at gatherings.
