Cinnamon Tortilla Chips
Description
This recipe transforms simple flour tortillas into cinnamon-flavored chips by slicing them into triangles and tossing with melted butter and a mixture of granulated sugar and cinnamon. Air frying at 350°F crisps them evenly while allowing the sugar to caramelize slightly. Once cooled, the chips become crunchy and hold a balanced cinnamon sweetness that pairs well with creamy or fruity accompaniments.
The texture is light and crisp, with the familiar flakiness of baked tortillas enhanced by the cinnamon sugar coating. The use of an air fryer speeds cooking and produces dryness without excess oil, preserving the delicate flavor of the tortillas.
These chips make a versatile snack or dessert component, excellent for dipping into fruit salsas, puddings, or ice cream. They can be prepared ahead and reheated or served at room temperature. Baking is an alternative method to air frying for those without an air fryer.
Ingredients
- 5 flour tortilla 8-inch taco-size
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ground cinnamon heaping 1/2 teaspoon
- 4 tablespoons butter melted
Instructions
- Using a large knife or a pizza cutter, cut all of the tortillas into 8 even triangles. Separate the pieces if needed and add to a large bowl.
- Stir together the sugar and cinnamon.
- Drizzle the melted butter over the tortilla pieces in the bowl, tossing to coat. Add as much of the cinnamon sugar mixture as desired, tossing to evenly distribute.
- Preheat an air fryer to 350°F for 3 minutes. Once preheated, add the tortilla pieces, working in batches if needed based on the size of your air fryer. Air fry at 350°F for 12-15 minutes, tossing every few minutes, until the chips are golden brown.
- Spread chips onto a baking sheet to cool. Chips will crisp as they cool. If working in batches, continue air frying until all of the chips are done.
- Serve with fruit salsa or ice cream.
Notes
- This recipe yields about 40 chips and can be easily doubled or tripled for larger gatherings; cook in batches to maintain crispness.
- Store extra cinnamon sugar mixture in an airtight container indefinitely for use in other recipes like cinnamon toast.
- To bake instead of air fry, arrange chips in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake at 375°F for about 10 minutes, flipping halfway, until crisp.
