Classic Irish Coffee

Classic Irish Coffee is a warm beverage combining hot brewed coffee with Irish whiskey and dark brown sugar, topped with slightly whipped heavy cream poured gently to float above the coffee. The layered presentation allows sipping the hot coffee through the cool cream, creating a smooth mix of temperatures and rich flavors.

Description

This Irish Coffee recipe starts by warming the serving mug with hot water, helping maintain the drink's temperature. After discarding the warming water, hot brewed coffee is poured into the mug along with measured Irish whiskey and dark brown sugar. Stirring dissolves the sugar fully into the hot liquid.

The cream is lightly whipped until bubbly but still pourable, then gently poured over the back of a spoon onto the coffee. This technique helps the cream float on top, creating a distinct layer rather than mixing immediately. Alternatively, the cream can be whipped firmer and dolloped on top. The layering offers a contrast in temperature and texture while maintaining a smooth flavor balance between strong coffee, sweetened whiskey, and rich cream.

Enjoying Irish Coffee involves tasting the hot coffee combined with sweet whiskey through the cool cream layer, providing a classic experience characteristic of the drink.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 ounces coffee hot brewed
  • 1 ounce Irish whiskey
  • 2 teaspoons dark brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Fill an Irish coffee mug with warm water and allow the water to warm up the glass.
  2. Discard the water and pour the brewed coffee into the warmed mug. Add the Irish whiskey and brown sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Use a whisk to slightly whip the heavy cream until it is bubbly but still pourable. Gently pour the cream over the back of a spoon on top of the coffee. If desired, you can whip the heavy cream until it is firm and dollop it onto the coffee.

Notes

  • Warm the serving mug before assembling the drink to help keep it hot longer.
  • Pour the lightly whipped cream over a spoon to float it gently on the coffee without mixing.
  • Maintaining separate layers allows tasting hot coffee through a cool cream topping, preserving the traditional experience.
