Coquito

Coquito is a creamy, spiced coconut holiday drink made from coconut cream, coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, spices, and rum. The recipe includes steeping whole spices in hot water to make a flavorful tea that is combined with the milk mixture and rum, producing a smooth, rich beverage served chilled.

Description

This traditional Coquito recipe starts by brewing a spiced tea from allspice berries, whole cloves, star anise, cinnamon sticks, and ground cinnamon. The tea infuses warm, aromatic flavors that underpin the drink. Separately, various milks—cream of coconut, sweetened condensed milk, coconut milk, and evaporated milk—are blended with vanilla extract until smooth.

After straining and cooling the spiced tea, a portion is whisked into the milk mixture along with white and spiced rums, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg, creating a creamy, tropical-flavored beverage with warming spices and a noticeable coconut character. The appearance is rich and inviting.

Coquito is refrigerated for several hours or overnight to meld flavors and served cold, often shaken before pouring. It’s commonly bottled for gifting or festive use and enjoyed as a creamy, slightly boozy drink during celebrations.

Ingredients

Servings

For the tea:

  • 1 cup water
  • 8 allspice berries
  • 6 clove whole
  • 5 star anise
  • 3 large cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

For the coquito:

  • 1 can cream of coconut (15 oz) (COCO LOPEZ IS THE BEST BRAND)
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (14 oz)
  • 1 can coconut milk (13.5 oz)
  • 1 cup evaporated milk (this is about half the can!)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract pure
  • 3/4 cup white rum (Don Q is my favorite. You can add more or less rum to taste!)
  • 1/4 cup rum I like Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, or Don Q 151, spiced or dark
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan set over medium, boil the water. Add the allspice, cloves, star anise, cinnamon sticks and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Steep the tea, strain it and cool it.
  2. In a high powered blender, add cream of coconut, sweetened condensed milk, coconut milk, evaporated milk, and vanilla. Pulse until smooth and fully combined. If using a smaller blender, blend in batches.
  3. Pour the milk mixture into a large bowl. Add 1/3 cup of the tea mixture to the milk mixture. Whisk in the rum, ground cinnamon and nutmeg.
  4. Pour the coquito into 2 (750ml) bottles, cover and chill for at least 4 hours or overnight. Shake before serving ice cold.
