Easy Apple Turnovers

These easy apple turnovers are packed full of fresh apples, orange zest, cinnamon, nutmeg, and wrapped in puff pastry, and baked till perfection.

Ingredients

  • 3 Granny Smith apples peeled, cored, diced into 1/2 inch dice
  • 3 tablespoon orange juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar packed
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg freshly grated
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • 1 package 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, defrosted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • turbinado sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Add diced apple into a large mixing bowl.
  3. Stir in orange juice and orange zest and toss to combine.
  4. Add in brown sugar, all-purpose flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and kosher salt.
  5. Stir to combine.
  6. Flour a board and lightly roll each sheet of puff pastry to a 12 by 12-inch square.
  7. Cut each sheet into 4 smaller squares and keep chilled until ready to use.
  8. In a small bowl whisk together a large egg and water.
  9. Brush the edges of each square with the egg wash and neatly place about 1/3 cup of the apple mixture on half of the square.
  10. Fold the pastry diagonally over the apple mixture and seal by pressing the edges with a fork.
  11. Transfer to a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
  12. Brush the top with egg wash and sprinkle the tops with Turbinado sugar.
  13. Make 2 small slits in the top of each turnover.
  14. Bake for 20 minutes or until browned and puffed.
  15. Serve warm or at room temperature.
