Description
This French Onion Beef Casserole begins by slowly sautéing thinly sliced yellow onions in butter until deeply caramelized, developing a sweet and savory base. Ground beef is then added along with an onion soup mix and seasoning, cooking until browned and crumbly. Excess grease is drained to maintain a balanced texture.
The casserole combines broth and canned condensed French onion soup to build a rich, flavorful liquid base into which wide egg noodles are submerged. Simmering covered allows the noodles to absorb the flavors while becoming tender without overcooking.
Once cooked, the casserole is removed from heat and topped with crispy fried onions, adding a crunchy contrast to the soft noodles and beef. This assembly serves as a hearty comfort dish with layered onion and beef flavors throughout.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter unsalted
- 1 large yellow onion thinly sliced
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 1 packet onion soup mix
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 3 cups beef broth
- 2 cans condensed onion soup French style
- 12 ounces egg noodles wide
- 6 ounces fried onions crispy
Instructions
- In a large skillet (I used a 12-inch) over medium-high heat, melt butter.
- Once melted, add onions and saute for 25-30 minutes. Stir occasionally until the onions are very tender and caramel color.
- Add the ground beef, onion soup mix, salt, and pepper. Stir to break the beef into smaller pieces. Cook until no longer pink, 5-7 minutes. (Remove any excess grease.)
- Add the beef broth and French onion soup.
- Add in the egg noodles, pressing them under the liquid to ensure the noodles are completely submerged. Bring the mixture to a boil.
- Once boiling, cover and reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer for 10- 12 minutes, or until the noodles are tender.
- Remove the skillet from the heat. Top with crispy fried onions. Serve.
