Frozen Margarita

This Frozen Margarita blends crushed ice, silver tequila, fresh lime juice, orange liqueur, and simple syrup for a smooth, icy cocktail. The glass rims are coated with a finely ground mix of lime zest, kosher salt, and sugar adding a bright, salty-sweet contrast. Garnished with lime wedges, it offers a classic, refreshing drink with balanced citrus and sweetness.

Description

The Frozen Margarita recipe combines crushed ice with silver tequila (100% agave), freshly squeezed lime juice, an orange-flavored liqueur such as Grand Marnier or triple sec, and simple syrup. These ingredients blend at high speed until smooth, forming a cold, frosty cocktail with balanced tartness, sweetness, and boozy warmth.

The rim preparation involves finely grinding lime zest with kosher salt and sugar, creating a zesty and slightly sweet crust that complements the drink's flavors. Chilling the glasses and moistening the rims with lime juice before coating ensures the garnish adheres well.

Serving in various glass types, garnished with lime wedges, the drink is suitable for casual or festive occasions where a classic cocktail with icy texture and citrus brightness is desired. The use of quality tequila and fresh lime juice highlights authenticity and freshness in this frozen twist on the traditional margarita.

Ingredients

Servings

For the frozen margarita

  • 1 cup ice crushed
  • 3 ounces silver tequila 100% agave
  • 1/4 cup lime juice fresh
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange liqueur such as Grand Marnier, Curaçao, or triple sec, or more, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup

For the lime, salt, and sugar rim

  • lime zest very finely grated, of 1 lime, preferably organic
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • lime for garnish, wedges

Instructions

Make the frozen margarita

  1. Toss the ice, tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and Simple Syrup in a blender and blitz on high speed until smooth.

Make the lime, salt, and sugar rim

  1. Combine the lime zest, salt, and sugar in a small blender or mini food processor and blend until thoroughly combined and very finely chopped. You should have about 1/4 cup. Dump about 1 tablespoon of the lime, salt, and sugar mixture onto a plate. Run a lime wedge around the rims of 2 chilled glasses—they can be margarita glasses, wineglasses, rocks glasses, pint glasses, whatever—and press the rims into the mixture to coat the edge.

Assemble the margarita

  1. Pour the margarita into the glasses and garnish with the lime wedges.
