Garlic Bread Sloppy Joes

Garlic Bread Sloppy Joes combine the elements of classic sloppy joe filling with garlicky buttered Italian bread topped with melted mozzarella and sharp cheddar cheeses. Ground beef cooked with onions and seasoned with garlic powder, yellow mustard, ketchup, and spices creates a savory, slightly tangy filling. The bread halves act like an open-faced sandwich base, crisped by baking along with the cheese topping to add a golden crust.

Description

Garlic Bread Sloppy Joes start with Italian bread sliced lengthwise and generously spread with softened butter mixed with garlic salt. The sloppy joe mixture features ground beef cooked with chopped onion, seasoned with garlic powder, yellow mustard, ketchup, salt, pepper, and a bit of water to keep the filling moist and saucy. After cooking, this mixture is spread over the buttered bread halves and topped with a blend of shredded mozzarella and sharp cheddar cheeses. Baking in the oven allows the bread to toast and the cheese to melt and brown, resulting in a satisfying combination of tender meaty filling and crisp, buttery bread. Finishing with chopped parsley adds a fresh color accent. The recipe also includes an adapted air fryer method to achieve similar browning on the cheese and toast.

The dish makes for a hearty meal suitable for casual dinners or gatherings, providing a homey twist on traditional sloppy joes with garlic bread acting as the base. It is rich in flavor with the sharpness of cheddar contrasting the sweet and tangy tomato sauce in the filling. The method ensures the bread holds up under the saucy topping without becoming soggy immediately.

Using softened butter mixed with garlic salt for the bread ensures even coverage and infusion of garlicky flavor. The instructions provide bake times and temperature for optimal melting and toasting, or an air fryer alternative which cooks at a higher heat for a shorter time for convenience.

Ingredients

Servings

Bread

  • 1 loaf Italian bread
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt

Sloppy Joe

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ¼ cup yellow onion chopped
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • ¾ cup ketchup 180 g
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup water

Topping

  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • parsley chopped for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F*. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Slice the loaf of bread lengthwise into two halves. Place both halves of the bread onto the lined baking sheet, cut side up.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the butter and garlic salt. Spread the butter mixture over the cut sides of the bread. Set aside while you make the sloppy joe filling.

Sloppy Joe

  1. In a medium nonstick skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and onions until the beef is no longer pink (8-10 minutes). Drain grease. Stir in the garlic powder, mustard, ketchup, salt, pepper, and water, mixing until combined.

Assembly

  1. Divide the sloppy joe mixture between both sides of the loaves and top with the mozzarella and cheddar cheese. Bake for 12-14 minutes or until golden brown.
  2. Cut into pieces and serve with parsley for garnish.

Notes

  • For a crispier garlic bread base, pre-toast the buttered bread halves slightly before adding the sloppy joe topping and cheese.
  • If using an air fryer, monitor closely as the cheese can brown quickly but still remain delicious slightly darker than oven baking.
  • Leftovers can be reheated briefly in the oven or air fryer to restore crispness.
  • The parsley garnish should be added just before serving to maintain its bright color.
