Ginger lemongrass tea recipe
Description
This tea is made by boiling fresh lemongrass stalks and sliced ginger in water, then simmering for at least 10 minutes to extract flavors. The lemongrass is typically cut into rounds to maximize contact with water and release its citrus aroma, while ginger adds a sharp, warming note without needing to be peeled.
After steeping, the solids are strained out. The resulting infusion is lightly sweetened as desired with brown sugar, honey, or other sweeteners. It can be enjoyed hot immediately or cooled and refrigerated for iced tea, served with or without ice cubes.
Various variations can enhance the drink's flavor, such as adding loose leaf tea for a caffeine boost, a squeeze of lime juice for brightness, pandan leaves for tropical aroma, or milk and black tea leaves for an Indian-style tea. The natural flavors make it refreshing and customizable.
The recommendation includes careful washing of lemongrass to remove soil trapped within stalk layers. Leftover strained ingredients can be repurposed in soups, minimizing waste.
Ingredients
- 1 Cup lemongrass 2.82 oz/ 80g or 8 lemongrass sticks for me (will be different if your stalks are of different lengths) Substitute: lemongrass leaves, bashed then cut into rounds about ½-inch long
- 3 lices ginger No need to peel.
- 4 Cups water
- brown sugar Optional. Substitute: honey, white sugar etc
Instructions
- Place the lemongrass, ginger and water in a pot. Bring to the boil over high heat.
- Reduce the heat and simmer for a minimum of 10 minutes. Taste, and simmer for longer if the flavor is not strong enough.
- Once happy with the flavor, switch off the fire and sieve out the lemongrass and ginger. (You can keep them to add to soup.)
- For hot tea: sweeten to taste then serve now.
- For iced tea: allow the tea to cool then refrigerate for at least 1-3 hours. After chilling, serve with or without ice cubes.
Notes
- Wash lemongrass thoroughly to remove any soil trapped within the layers before cutting.
- Lemongrass leaves can be used as a substitute, bashed and cut into ½-inch rounds.
- Steep the ingredients for longer if a stronger flavor is desired.
- Leftover ginger and lemongrass from straining can be saved and used in soups for added flavor.
- Sweeten with brown sugar, honey, or other sweeteners based on preference.
- Serve hot or chill for iced tea, refrigerating at least 1-3 hours before serving cold.
