Glühwein - German Mulled Wine
Description
This German Mulled Wine recipe begins by washing and juicing oranges, reserving the peeled sections. Frozen blueberries and orange juice are warmed and pureed to create a fruity base. The reserved orange pieces along with cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and a pinch of nutmeg are added and the mixture is heated slowly for 25-30 minutes to blend the spice flavors without boiling. Brown sugar sweetens the mixture. Finally, brandy is stirred in, and the mulled wine is strained before serving warm in glasses garnished with orange slices and cinnamon sticks.
This preparation yields a fragrant and gently spiced mulled wine that balances bright citrus notes and deep berry flavors with warming aromatic spices. Serving it warm emphasizes the scents and provides comfort on cold days. The key is controlling the temperature to preserve the wine's alcohol content and prevent bitterness.
Adjust the sugar to taste and substitute fresh blueberries if preferred, though frozen work well. Washing oranges removes wax and enhances aroma. Cooking on low heat longer intensifies the flavor. Avoid boiling to retain alcohol and delicate fragrances.
Ingredients
- ½ cup blueberries frozen
- 2 orange
- 1 bottle red wine 750 ml or about 25 ounces
- 3 tablespoon brown sugar
- 2 cinnamon stick
- 2 pieces star anise
- 1 teaspoon cloves
- nutmeg pinch
- ¼ cup brandy dark rum or schnapps
Garnish
- 4 orange sliced
- 4 cinnamon stick or star anise
Instructions
- Wash the oranges thoroughly in hot water, squeeze out the juice and reserve the leftover orange pieces.
- Add frozen blueberries and the squeezed-out orange juice to a pot. Stir to combine, warm under low heat until thawed, then process using a hand blender.
- Add the reserved orange pieces, cinnamon, star anise, cloves, and nutmeg. With the heat still set on low, cover, and warm for 25-30 minutes, stirring from time to time (see notes). Do not let it boil.
- Add the brandy, sieve, pour into glasses, garnish and serve warm.
Notes
- To intensify flavor, simmer the Glühwein on low heat for 50–60 minutes instead of 25–30.
- Wash oranges in hot water to remove wax and enhance aroma before preparation.
- Maintain temperature between 72°C and 75°C to preserve alcohol content and avoid evaporation.
- Adjust the amount of brown sugar to achieve your preferred sweetness.
- Fresh blueberries can be used instead of frozen if available and preferred.
