Homemade Pita Bread

Homemade Pita Bread uses basic pantry ingredients like flour, yeast, sugar, salt, water, and olive oil, resulting in soft dough that puffs up when baked at high heat to form characteristic pockets. The method involves mixing and kneading the dough twice, allowing for two rises to develop structure and elasticity. Baking on a hot oven surface quickly cooks the rounds, producing pita pockets perfect for stuffing sandwiches or dipping.

Description

Homemade Pita Bread combines all-purpose flour, instant yeast, sugar, salt, warm water, and olive oil. After mixing and kneading until smooth, the dough rests to rise before being divided and shaped into balls which rise again. Rolling each into flat circles and baking at 500°F causes the dough to puff, creating internal pockets.

The texture is soft but sturdy enough to hold fillings once cooled. The quick bake time locks in moisture while browning the edges. This bread can be used for sandwiches, wraps, or accompanying dips because of its pocket feature.

Ensure the dough is not sticky before resting and handle gently to keep the air bubbles intact for puffing. Baking on a hot baking tray or rack helps the bread cook evenly and form pockets. The recipe makes 12 pita rounds.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour divided
  • 1 ½ teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 ¾ cup water warm
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl combine 2 cups of flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix well and add the warm water and olive oil.
  2. Slowly stir in the remaining 2 cups of flour until the dough becomes firm and not sticky.
  3. Turn onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Cover with plastic wrap, then a towel letting it rise for 20 minutes.
  4. Punch down the dough and divide into two equal parts, divide each half into six pieces for a total of 12.
  5. Shape each piece into a smooth ball, cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 500°F. On a floured surface roll each ball into a 7 inch circle.
  7. Place 4 circles onto a cooling rack or a baking tray and bake for 5 minutes. The dough will puff up creating a pocket in the middle and brown on the edges.
