Honeydew Agua Fresca with Raspberries Recipe
Description
The recipe uses ripe honeydew melon, blended and strained to extract pure juice free from pulp, resulting in a clear, lightly sweet liquid base. Sweetening with superfine (baking) sugar helps it dissolve quickly without grit, while fresh lime juice adds acidity and balance. The combination gives a gentle fruity flavor that is neither too heavy nor sugary.
Raspberries served as garnish add a pop of color and mild tartness to contrast the mellow melon. The agua fresca is diluted with water to create a refreshing, hydrating beverage rather than a concentrated juice. Serving it over ice enhances its cooling effect.
It is best stored refrigerated for up to three days and stirred before serving as separation may occur. Freezing whole affects texture negatively, but using ice cube trays allows frozen cubes that can be used in drinks for a slushy effect.
Ingredients
- 1 honeydew melon 5 lb, ripe
- 1/2 cup baking sugar also called "superfine" or "ultrafine"
- 5 lime juiced
- 1 cup raspberry for garnish
Instructions
- Cut the melon in half, remove the seeds with a spoon, then cut the flesh from the peel and slice it into chunks. Place half of the melon in a large blender and process until liquefied. Pour the liquefied melon into a fine mesh sieve set over a large bowl.
- Use a spatula to press the melon into the sieve, allowing the juice to squeeze through into the bowl. Occasionally scrape the flesh off the sieve to allow more juice to transfer to the bowl. Repeat with the remaining melon.
- Transfer the melon juice to a large pitcher and add four cups of water.
- Combine lime juice and sugar in a small bowl, then stir until the sugar is dissolved. Pour the lime-sugar mixture into the pitcher and stir well. Serve over ice, garnished with raspberries.
Notes
- If superfine baking sugar is unavailable, grind granulated sugar in a blender to a finer texture to aid dissolution.
- Store the agua fresca in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, stirring before serving due to natural separation.
- Freezing in large quantities is not recommended; use ice cube trays for freezing portions suitable for drinks.
