Jugo de Avena [Recipe + Video] Oats and Milk Drink
Description
Jugo de Avena blends rolled oats with skim milk to create a smooth, creamy beverage. The oats and milk mixture is blended vigorously and optionally strained to remove solids, producing a light oat texture. Sweetener is added according to taste, making the drink gently sweet without overpowering the oat flavor.
Chilling is important to keep the drink cold and stable; freezing briefly is preferred but refrigeration is an option for longer storage. Adding lime juice at the end and stirring slowly ensures the citrus is dispersed without curdling the milk base. The combination gives a mild tang that brightens the oat drink.
This cool oat beverage can be enjoyed on its own as a refreshing drink. Variations with alternative sweeteners or non-milk liquids are possible but might affect flavor and texture.
The recipe allows for optional ice cubes to keep it chilled when served. Experimentation with add-ins is mentioned but lime juice and milk form the traditional base.
Ingredients
- 1 quart milk 1 liter, skim
- 1 cup rolled oats (whole, not instant)
- 1 cup granulated sugar you might not use all of it
- 2 cups ice cubes (optional)
- lime juice juice of 3 limes
Instructions
1. Blending
- Mix the milk and oats. Blend at high speed for 3 minutes. Sieve to get rid of solids (optional). Add sugar to taste.
2. Chilling
- Chill in the freezer (it has to be very cold, or it will curdle). If you need to store for a few hours, chill in the fridge instead of the freezer. Remove from the freezer and add the ice, stir. Slowly pour the lime juice into the oatmeal mix stirring constantly.
3. Serving
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- You may adjust sweetness with alternatives to granulated sugar for a lighter drink without added sugar.
- Chill the drink thoroughly to avoid curdling; storing in the fridge is better for longer holding times than the freezer.
- Adding lime juice slowly while stirring prevents the milk from curdling in the finished beverage.
- The traditional version uses skim milk, but you can substitute water or try other add-ins cautiously, noting they may alter the flavor.
