Maple Bourbon Sour Recipe

The Maple Bourbon Sour blends bourbon, fresh lemon juice, and maple syrup with Angostura bitters to create a balanced cocktail. Optional cocktail foamer or egg white can be added for a smooth foamy top. It’s shaken with and without ice to produce a frothy texture and served with a lemon slice and bitters drop garnish.

Description

Maple Bourbon Sour is a cocktail combining bourbon whiskey, tart lemon juice, and sweet maple syrup with aromatic Angostura bitters. The optional use of cocktail foamer or egg white provides a foamy, silky head. The mixing technique involves first shaking the ingredients without ice to build foam, then shaking again with ice to chill before straining into a glass.

Served either neat when using foamer or over ice when skipping the foam, this drink balances warmth from bourbon with citrus brightness and sweetness from maple syrup. The lemon slice garnish adds a fresh aroma, while a few drops of bitters enhance complexity.

This cocktail suits those looking for a nuanced sour cocktail with natural sweetening. It's ideal for an evening drink that offers smooth texture and a layered flavor profile with minimal ingredients.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • ¾ ounce lemon juice
  • ¾ ounce maple syrup
  • 3 drops Angostura bitters
  • 1 quirt cocktail foamer optional
  • lemon to serve, slice

Instructions

  1. Add the bourbon, lemon juice, maple syrup, bitters, and if using the cocktail foamer to a cocktail shaker.
  2. Shake well for 20 seconds then add a few pieces of ice and shake for another 20 seconds, until there is lots of foam.
  3. Strain the maple bourbon sour into a glass and garnish with a thin slice of lemon and a few drops of Angostura bitters.

Notes

  • If using cocktail foamer or egg white, serve the drink without ice to keep the foam intact.
  • Without foamer, add a large ice cube directly to the glass after straining for chill.
  • The shaking without ice first is important to generate a thick foam before chilling the drink.
