Mint Julep a la Dabney
Description
The Mint Julep a la Dabney starts by muddling granulated sugar and fresh mint in cold water to extract mint oils without over crushing leaves. Peach brandy, or alternatives like apple brandy, Cognac, rum, or bourbon, blend in for depth and sweetness. The mixture is poured over a cup filled with domed crushed ice to chill thoroughly.
Garnishes include fresh berries, fruit pieces, mint sprigs arranged as a bouquet, and optionally edible flowers cleaned and chosen carefully to complement the drink's flavors and appearance. It is traditionally served with a metal straw in a chilled silver or metal julep cup or a sturdy glass.
This cocktail suits warm weather and leisurely sipping, balancing herbal freshness with smooth brandy and fruit accents. The recipe recommends using superfine sugar made by pulsing granulated sugar to a nearly powdery texture, which dissolves well without added starch.
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar pulverized
- 3 tbsp water cold
- 4 mint to muddle, sprigs
- 3 oz peach brandy or apple brandy
- ice to fill the cup, crushed
- Berry for garnish, small pieces of fruit
- Fruit for garnish, small pieces of fruit
- 4 mint for garnish, sprigs
- Edible Flowers for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Create the julep base by muddling the pulverized sugar, water, and mint together at the bottom of a chilled silver or metal julep or a double old fashioned glass. Muddle just enough to extract the oils from the mint, then remove the mint sprigs from the cup and discard them.
- Add in the brandy (or cognac, bourbon, rum, or mix of them) and stir well.
- Pour in the crushed ice until it domes over the cup.
- Garnish the ice with fruits and flowers. Bury the stems of the mint into the ice to create a bouquet.
- Serve with a silver or metal straw.
Notes
- Use a food processor to pulse granulated sugar into superfine sugar for better dissolution in the julep.
- If you lack a metal julep cup, a double old fashioned glass works as a suitable alternative.
- Choose edible flowers cautiously, ensuring they are safe to eat and rinsed before use.
- Seasonal berries and fruits provide the best garnish, reflecting freshness and variety.
- Substitute peach brandy with good-quality apple brandy, Cognac, dark rum, or bourbon if peach brandy isn't available.
