Description
Mulled White Wine is prepared by combining white wine with honey, optional brandy, and spices such as whole cloves, peppercorns, star anise, a cinnamon stick, ginger slices, and orange slices in a pot. The mixture is brought to a gentle simmer, then covered and kept at low heat for about 20 minutes to allow the spices and citrus to release their aromas and flavor into the wine.
The process softens the wine's acidity while integrating the sweetness of honey and depth from spices like star anise and cinnamon. The fresh ginger and orange contribute bright and warming notes, making the drink comforting and aromatic. Serving strained mulled wine warm with a cinnamon stick garnish enhances its presentation and aroma.
This drink suits cold days and festive occasions, and it can be kept warm on a very low heat for several hours without boiling. Reducing alcohol content is possible by boiling with the lid on instead of gently simmering covered.
Ingredients
- 1 bottle white wine medium-bodied
- ¼ cup honey
- ¼ cup brandy optional
- ½ teaspoon whole clove
- ½ teaspoon whole peppercorn
- 1 naval orange sliced
- 4 lices ginger fresh
- 4 star anise
- 4 inch cinnamon stick plus more to garnish
Instructions
- Combine all of the ingredients in a medium-sized pot.
- Bring to a gentle simmer over medium-high heat and then reduce the temperature to low, cover the pot, and very gently simmer for 20 minutes.
- To serve, strain the mulled white wine into mugs and, if you'd like, garnish with a cinnamon stick. NOTE: You can keep the mulled wine warm on the element on the very lowest setting for up to 3 hours.
Notes
- To lower the alcohol content, boil the mulled wine with the lid on instead of simmering covered.
