Ingredients
Pie Crust
- 24 Oreo cookies reserve about a half cup of crumbs for the topping
- 5 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
Homemade Chocolate Pudding Filling:
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ⅓ cup cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 4 large egg yolks
- 3 cups whole milk
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Topping:
- crushed Oreo cookies reserved from the pie crust
- gummy worms
Instructions
Make Crust
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- In a food processor, pulse the Oreo cookies until they become fine crumbs.
- Mix the Oreo crumbs with the melted butter until well combined.
- Press the mixture evenly into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie dish.
- Bake the crust for 8-10 minutes. Let it cool completely before adding the filling.
Make Pudding
- In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks and milk until combined.
- Gradually whisk the milk mixture into the saucepan with the dry ingredients until smooth.
- Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil. Continue cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes to (ensure a thick consistency that will set perfectly for slicing), then remove from heat.
- Stir in the butter and vanilla extract until fully melted and incorporated.
- Pour the pudding into a bowl and cover with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the surface of the pudding to prevent a skin from forming.
- Let it cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours to further set.
Assemble Pie
- Once the Oreo crust is cool and the pudding has set in the fridge, pour the pudding into the crust and spread it evenly.
- Sprinkle the top with crushed Oreo cookies (without filling).
- Arrange gummy worms on top, gently pressing them into the crumbs to secure them.
- Refrigerate the assembled pie for at least 4 hours or until set and firm for perfect slicing.
- Slice the dirt pie and enjoy!
Notes
- If you place the pudding mixture into the refrigerator when it is still warm, this will cause condensation to form.
- Allow the pudding mixture enough time to thicken on the stove. Otherwise, it will be very runny and won’t be set properly in the refrigerator.
- Don’t try to assemble your pie if the crust or filling is still warm. It will ruin the texture and it won’t firm up properly.
