Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 225 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Position a 3 to 5 pound boneless pork butt roast in a 5 or 7-quart oven-safe pot with a lid, or alternatively, you can use a roasting pan that you will later cover with aluminum foil.
- Rub 2 tablespoons garlic powder, 1 tablespoon salt, and 1 tablespoon black pepper all over the pork roast to coat it evenly. Drizzle 2 tablespoons hickory liquid smoke over the seasoned pork.
- Cover the pot with its lid or tightly cover the roasting pan with aluminum foil. Roast for 8 to 9 hours, until pork shreds easily with a fork. Shred the cooked pork in the pan and mix it well with the juices.
Homemade BBQ Sauce
- Meanwhile, make the homemade bbq sauce. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 cup ketchup, 1/4 cup brown sugar1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce, 2 teaspoons liquid smoke, 2 teaspoons salt, 2 teaspoons black pepper, 2 teaspoons garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard until well combined.
- Stir bbq sauce into shredded cooked pork and serve hot.
Notes
- It is preferable to sauce the meat after it has been cooked to enhance its flavor profile. Sauce only the amount of pork you plan to consume immediately, so the leftovers remain versatile for other uses.
