Popular Korean Street Toast

Popular Korean Street Toast features a savory egg and vegetable omelette layered between toasted sandwich bread with ham, ketchup, and mayonnaise. The egg mixture includes shredded cabbage, carrot, and green onion, seasoned with salt and cooked into flat patties. Toasted bread layered with ham, cheese, and a sprinkle of sugar balances sweetness with savory elements, replicating a popular Korean street food.

Description

This recipe begins by mixing beaten eggs with thinly shredded cabbage, carrot, chopped green onion, and salt, creating a vegetable-studded egg batter. Small egg omelettes are cooked in butter until golden and tender, matching the size of sandwich bread. Meanwhile, thin slices of deli ham are briefly heated, and sandwich bread is toasted in butter until crisp.

The toast is assembled by layering an egg patty on a piece of toasted bread, sprinkling sugar, and drizzling ketchup and mayonnaise. A slice of ham and cheese is added before topping with another piece of toast. The contrast of crunchy toasted bread, soft flavorful egg, and sweet-savory condiments gives the sandwich its distinctive taste and texture.

Serving the sandwich warm provides the best experience, and adding extra shredded cabbage inside can increase crunchiness if desired. This snack or light meal is an accessible way to enjoy a popular Korean street food at home.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/4 cabbage thinly shredded
  • 1/2 carrot thinly shredded
  • 1 green onion chopped
  • 4 egg
  • a pinch salt
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 4 tbsp ketchup
  • 4 tbsp mayonnaise optional
  • 4 lices ham deli
  • 8 lices sandwich bread

Instructions

  1. Beat eggs in a large mixing bowl and add the shredded cabbage, carrot, green onion, and a pinch of salt; mix well.
  2. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter on a skillet over medium low heat. Spoon in a portion of egg and vegetable mixture, and spread it around to about the size of your sandwich bread. (You can make two egg pieces at a time) Cook the egg omelette 2-3 minutes on one side and flip. Cook until golden brown. Transfer the omelette to a plate and repeat the next batch.
  3. Heat ham slices briefly, about 30-60 seconds; set aside. Melt remaining tablespoon of butter and toast the sandwich bread until golden and crisp.

To assemble the toast

  1. Put a piece of egg patty on the toast. Sprinkle about 2 teaspoon of sugar (or however much you desire), and squirt some ketchup and mayo (if using) on top. Place a slice of ham and a cheese on top and top with the another toasted bread.

  • Use deli ham and sandwich bread to closely replicate Korean street toast texture and flavor.
