Rum Negroni Recipe
Description
The Rum Negroni Recipe creates a cocktail with dark rum replacing the typical gin, offering deeper molasses and caramel notes. Equal parts of dark rum, Campari, and sweet vermouth are stirred with ice until chilled, then strained over a large ice cube in a rocks glass. The preparation includes crafting a strip of orange peel, which is rolled and singed with a flame to release aromatic oils that complement the drink's bitterness and sweetness.
The final drink contrasts the rum’s warmth with Campari’s bitter orange flavor and the smooth, spicy vermouth. The large ice cube slows dilution, keeping the flavors concentrated. The burnt orange peel garnish adds a bright, smoky citrus note enhancing the aroma and complexity.
This cocktail is ideal for sipping slowly and pairs well with appetizers due to its bitter and sweet balance. It offers a variation on the classic Negroni, suitable for those preferring rum’s richer depth.
Ingredients
- 1 ounce dark rum
- 1 ounce Campari
- 1 ounce sweet vermouth
- orange to serve, burnt peel
Instructions
- Cut a long strip of orange peel with a vegetable peeler. Roll up the peel and then stick a cocktail skewer through it to hold it together. Use a lighter to singe the edges. (You can also cut a smaller strip of orange peel, singe it slightly, and drop it into the glass.)
- Fill a cocktail mixer half full with ice. Add the dark rum, Campari, and sweet vermouth to the cocktail mixer and stir until chilled.
- Place a large ice cube into a rocks glass and pour the rum negroni over the top.
