Strawberry Nutella French Toast Roll Ups
Description
The bread slices are flattened with a rolling pin, making them easier to roll and hold the filling. Nutella is spread evenly, then sprinkled with diced strawberries before rolling into tubes where the chocolate acts as a sealant. The roll ups are dipped in a mixture of egg, milk, and salt, then cooked in butter over medium-high heat, turning regularly for even golden browning on all sides.
After cooking, the roll ups are immediately rolled in caster sugar to coat the warm surface, creating a sweet and slightly crunchy finish. Because of the sugar content and moisture, these roll ups are best enjoyed right away as they can become soggy if stored.
The recipe yields about three servings depending on portion size and notes that icing sugar is not recommended for coating due to dissolving too quickly. Careful application of the sugar ensures adhesion and texture.
Ingredients
- 6 lices white sandwich bread crusts removed, fresh
- 1/2 punnet strawberries , diced small
- 4 1/2 tbsp Nutella
- 1/4 cup caster sugar (superfine sugar) (Note 1)
- 1 tbsp butter
Egg Mixture
- 1 egg (large)
- 2 tbsp milk (full cream or low fat)
- Pinch salt
Instructions
- Combine Egg Mixture in a bowl with a flat base large enough to lie the roll up in. Whisk to combine.
- Spread sugar out in a small dish.
- Use a rolling pin to roll the bread flat. This makes them easier to roll up (and stay rolled up).
- Spread each piece of bread with around 3/4 tbsp of Nutella.
- Sprinkle strawberries along the bottom of each piece of bread.
- Roll up bread. The Nutella will keep it sealed.
- Melt butter in pan over medium high heat.
- Roll each roll up in the Egg Mixture, shake off excess then place in the pan. Repeat with remaining roll ups.
- Cook for around 4 minutes until each side is golden, rotating every 1 minute or so.
- Remove from pan and immediately place in the sugar. Roll to coat in sugar, then remove. Repeat with remaining roll ups.
- Serve immediately, while warm.
Notes
- Rolling the bread flat helps the roll ups stay evenly rolled and sealed.
- Castor sugar sticks better than icing sugar for coating the cooked roll ups.
- These are best eaten immediately as they can become soggy if stored.
- The recipe yields approximately 3 servings based on sugar consumption estimated at 2 tablespoons.
