Tangerine or mandarin mojito
Description
This mojito variation uses freshly squeezed mandarin or tangerine juice combined with lime juice and sugar cane juice or simple syrup for a well-rounded citrus sweetness. Fresh mint is gently muddled with the sweetener to release its essential oils, providing herbal freshness. Rum is added to taste, then mixed with the juices.
Serving options include mixing in a pitcher or individual glasses with ice cubes, mint leaves, and mandarin slices. Topping with chilled sparkling water or club soda imparts a crisp, bubbly texture. The drink is stirred gently before serving to blend flavors while preserving carbonation.
The mojito is best served immediately to enjoy the freshness of the citrus and mint. Its balance of sweetness, acidity, and herbal notes makes it a cooler for warm weather or casual gatherings.
A non-alcoholic version can be made by omitting rum and increasing sparkling water or lemonade accordingly.
Ingredients
- 2 cups mandarin juice from about 8-10 mandarins (depending on the size, or tangerine juice
- ¼ cup lime juice fresh
- 1 cup sugar cane juice guarapo, or ½ cup simple syrup/sugar, adjust to taste
- 8 oz mint leaves
- sparkling water adjust more or less based on your preference, or club soda, chilled, ~1 ½ cups
- 1 to ½ cups rum adjust to taste
- ice
Garnishes:
- mandarin slices or tangerine slices
- mint leaves
- sugar optional, for decorating rims
Instructions
- You can make the mojitos in individual glasses or in a pitcher. I make them in a pitcher and only add a bit of sparkling water. Then in each glass, I place ice cubes, mint leaves and fruit slices, pour the drink into the glasses and then top it off with some sparkling water.
- Gently muddle or crush the mint leaves with the sugar cane juice (or sugar or simple syrup).
- Add the rum, lime juice, and mandarin juice, mix well and taste. Add sugar or rum if needed – remember than you will still add sparkling water. Add a few ice cubes and some mandarin slices. Then top off with the sparkling water and mix gently.
- As mentioned above, to serve in each individual glass: put ice cube in the glass, then add some fresh mint leaves and mandarin slices, and pour the drink into the glasses. Top off with additional sparkling water or club soda if needed.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- To make a mocktail, omit the rum and replace it with extra sparkling water or sparkling lemonade.
- Adjust the amount of rum and sugar to your taste, remembering the sparkling water will dilute sweetness and alcohol.
- Muddle mint gently to avoid bitterness while releasing flavor.
- Serve immediately after preparation to keep the drink fresh and sparkling.
