The Best Bourbon Sour Recipe

The Best Bourbon Sour mixes good-quality bourbon with lemon juice and simple syrup, offering a balanced sweet and sour cocktail. Optionally, egg white or cocktail foamer adds a frothy texture, and garnishes of maraschino cherry and orange slice complete the presentation.

Description

The Best Bourbon Sour blends bourbon with fresh lemon juice and homemade simple syrup to achieve a classic balance of tartness and sweetness. Shaken with ice, the mixture chills and dilutes slightly, and adding egg white or a cocktail foamer creates a smooth, frothy head, enhancing mouthfeel. If the foamer is omitted, stirring keeps the drink cold without foam.

Serving it in a rocks glass with a maraschino cherry and orange slice garnish highlights the traditional presentation and provides contrasting aromas. The simple syrup is easy to make and keeps refrigerated for up to two weeks, allowing the recipe to be replicated without commercial mixers.

Adding ice directly to the glass is recommended if the cocktail is served without foam, ensuring it remains chilled throughout enjoyment.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 ounces bourbon good-quality
  • 1 ounce lemon juice
  • 1 ounce simple syrup see notes
  • 1-2 drop egg optional, cocktail foamer or egg white
  • maraschino cherry to garnish, slice
  • orange to garnish, slice

Instructions

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker half full with ice and add the bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup, and if using, cocktail foamer.
  2. Shake for at least 30 seconds - until there is lots of foam. (If you're not using foamer, simply stir until it's cold.)
  3. Strain into a rocks glass and garnish with a maraschino cherry and an orange slice.

Notes

  • To make simple syrup, heat 2 parts water with 1 part sugar until dissolved; it can be stored refrigerated for up to two weeks.
  • The cocktail foamer or egg white adds froth but is optional; without it, stirring with ice suffices to chill the drink.
  • If serving without foam, add ice to the glass to keep the bourbon sour cold longer.
