The Best Egg Roll in a Bowl
Description
This dish begins by sautéing diced red onions and minced garlic in sesame oil until softened. Ground pork, seasoned lightly with salt and white pepper, is then added along with grated ginger and cooked until browned and crumbled. The key vegetable element is coleslaw mix (shredded cabbage and carrots), which is added last and cooked until tender but still retaining some bite.
This stir-fry is served warm in individual bowls, topped with a drizzle of mayonnaise mixed with sriracha for a spicy, creamy accent. Black sesame seeds and sliced green onions add subtle nuttiness and fresh sharpness. The recipe highlights a balance of savory pork, aromatic ginger, and crisp-tender cabbage, delivering the essence of an egg roll filling in a convenient bowl format.
This approach provides a low-carb alternative to fried egg rolls while retaining key flavors and textures. It’s straightforward to prepare and good for a quick lunch or dinner.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1/2 red onion diced
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- salt to taste, sea salt
- white pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup coleslaw mix
- 1/2 teaspoon ginger grated
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise with sriracha
- black sesame seeds for garnishing
- green onion for garnishing, sliced
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet on medium heat. Add sesame oil, and once the oil is hot, add the red onions and the minced garlic. Sauté until the red onions begin to soften.
- Season the ground pork with a pinch of salt and pepper. Add the pork and ginger to the skillet. Cook until pork is browned and crumbled, about 5 minutes.
- When the pork is cooked through, add the coleslaw mix and season with another pinch of salt and pepper. Stir well. Cook the egg roll mixture for about 5 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender.
- Divide the egg roll mixture between 2 serving bowls and drizzle over the sriracha mayonnaise. Garnish with black sesame seeds and sliced green onions.
