Vietnamese Yogurt Coffee (Sua Chua Cafe)

Vietnamese Yogurt Coffee combines brewed Vietnamese coffee with a creamy mix of plain yogurt and sweetened condensed milk, served over crushed ice. The result is a smooth, refreshing beverage with a balance of bold coffee flavor tempered by the tang of yogurt and sweetness, making it a textured, chilled drink ideal for warm weather or as a satisfying pick-me-up.

Description

This recipe brews Vietnamese coffee using a phin filter, which allows the strong coffee grounds to drip slowly into a glass. While brewing, plain yogurt is gently combined with sweetened condensed milk, creating a creamy and slightly tangy base. Once the coffee is ready, it is poured over the yogurt mixture, and plenty of crushed ice is added to cool and dilute slightly. The drink delivers a distinct combination of smooth coffee bitterness and mild, sweet tartness from the yogurt and condensed milk.

The texture is slightly thickened by the yogurt yet easily blended with the ice, creating a refreshing and invigorating drink. The coffee strength and sweetener amount can be customized, making this beverage adaptable for different palates. The use of Vietnamese coffee lends traditional robust flavor as it drips slowly, enhancing aroma and depth.

This coffee drink is typically served cold immediately to keep the ice from melting too much, preserving its frosty texture and balanced flavor. It works well as a morning or afternoon drink, especially in warm climates or seasons.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 tablespoons ground coffee Vietnamese
  • 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon hot water
  • 1 1/2 cups PLAIN yogurt
  • 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • ice crushed

Instructions

  1. Add Vietnamese ground coffee to the phin filter chamber and place the filter press on top, press gently. Place the filter over a clean glass and then add 1 tablespoon of hot water wait for about 10-20 seconds to let the ground coffee swell and settle.
  2. Add the remaining hot water and cover the chamber with the filter cap. Let the coffee liquid drip into the glass. This may take a few minutes. If you need more detailed instructions with step-by-step photos to brew Vietnamese coffee, visit the link in the recipe notes down below.
  3. While the coffee is being brewed, add yogurt and sweetened condensed milk to a bowl and mix gently to combine. Divide the mixture into serving glasses. You can add more condensed milk to taste.
  4. Once the coffee is ready, divide into serving glass. Top with plenty of crushed ice and serve immediately.
