Whiskey Smash Recipe

The Whiskey Smash Recipe blends fresh mint, lemon, sugar, and whiskey, shaken with crushed ice to produce a bright, slightly sweet cocktail with herbal and citrus notes. The muddling technique releases essential oils and juices, creating a layered flavor that refreshes when served over ice and garnished with mint.

Description

This Whiskey Smash Recipe combines mint leaves, lemon wedges, and sugar by muddling to dissolve the sugar and release fresh flavors. Adding whiskey and shaking ensures the ingredients mix thoroughly. Served over crushed ice in a short glass and garnished with mint, the drink balances sweetness, tartness, and herbal brightness.

The crushed ice helps keep the drink cold and slightly dilutes it as it melts, softening the boldness of the whiskey while highlighting citrus and mint. This cocktail works well as a refreshing sip in warmer weather or as an alternative to traditional whiskey drinks.

For best results, consume the cocktail fresh, as the muddled mixture does not store well. However, the mint, lemon, and sugar muddle can be refrigerated for up to one day if prepared in advance, with a quick stir or shake before adding whiskey and ice.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 tablespoons mint leaf about 7 or 8 leaves, fresh
  • lemon cut into four pieces, half of one
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 2 ounces whiskey
  • 1 cup ice crushed

Instructions

  1. Place the mint, lemon wedges, and sugar in a cocktail shaker. You can also use a mason jar instead of a cocktail shaker. Muddle them together or smash the stuff up with a muddler (or the handle of a wooden spoon) until the sugar has dissolved and the lemon has released its juices.
  2. Add the whiskey, cover, and shake for 30 seconds. Transfer the mixture to an Old-Fashioned glass.
  3. Top with crushed ice and garnish with a sprig of mint.
