Yellow Jasmine Rice
Description
This recipe prepares Yellow Jasmine Rice by sautéing butter with garlic and warming spices—turmeric, cumin, and cinnamon—to infuse the butter before adding uncooked jasmine rice. Toasting the rice in the spiced butter slightly cooks the grains and deepens flavor. Chicken broth and an optional bay leaf are then added, and the mixture is brought to a boil before simmering gently with the lid on for 20 minutes. Resting with the lid on for an additional 10 minutes allows steam to finish cooking the rice evenly.
The turmeric gives the rice its characteristic yellow color, while cumin and cinnamon add a soft warm aroma without overpowering the delicate jasmine fragrance. The final texture is fluffy and light, ideal as a side for grilled or roasted meats or vegetables.
Using a flavorful broth instead of plain water enhances the savory depth, and resting the rice after cooking ensures better texture and moisture distribution.
Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp butter $0.22
- 2 cloves garlic $0.16, minced
- 1 tsp Turmeric $0.10
- 1/4 tsp cumin $0.02
- 1/8 tsp cinnamon $0.02
- 2 cups jasmine rice $0.96, uncooked long grain
- 3 cups chicken broth $0.38
- 1 bay leaf $0.15, optional
Instructions
- Add the butter, garlic, turmeric, cumin, and cinnamon to a medium sauce pot. Sauté over medium heat for 1-2 minutes, or just until the garlic has softened.
- Add the uncooked rice to the pot. Stir and cook over medium heat for about 2 minutes to slightly toast the rice. You may hear a slight popping or crackling noise as the rice toasts.
- Add the chicken broth and bay leaf to the pot. Place a lid on top, increase the heat to high, and bring the pot to a rolling boil. As soon as it reaches a full boil, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer (with the lid in place) for 20 minutes.
- After letting it simmer for 20 minutes, turn the heat off and let it rest (do not remove the lid) for an additional 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork and serve.
Notes
- Using Better Than Bouillon concentrate or similar adds sufficient salt and flavor to the broth used for cooking.
