Za'atar
Description
Za'atar consists of fresh or dried thyme mixed with toasted sesame seeds, sumac, and sea salt. The sumac adds a lemony tang that balances the herbal thyme and nutty sesame seeds. Optional cumin adds warmth but is not essential.
The blend is finely ground or coarsely mixed depending on preference. It enhances labneh, hummus, baba ganoush, avocado toast, and similar dishes by adding brightness and texture.
It’s best used freshly mixed to preserve the fragrance of the herbs and toasted seeds. Grinding with a mortar and pestle intensifies the aroma.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons fresh thyme chopped or 2 teaspoons dried
- 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
- 2 teaspoons sumac ground
- 1/2 teaspoon salt sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon cumin optional, ground
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix the thyme, sesame seeds, sumac, and sea salt. Alternatively, you can grind everything in a mortar and pestle for a finer spice.
- Sprinkle onto labneh, hummus, baba ganoush, avocado toast, or follow any of the serving suggestions listed above.
