5-Minute Caffeine-Free Chai Mix

This caffeine-free chai mix blends ground cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, black pepper, nutmeg, and cloves to create a warm, spiced base for chai lattes without tea or caffeine. It can be quickly mixed into hot or iced drinks with dairy-free milk and sweetener, yielding a rich, aromatic beverage. The ground spices combine to provide robust flavor and balanced warmth ideal for those avoiding caffeine yet wanting a traditional chai taste.

Description

The 5-Minute Caffeine-Free Chai Mix combines a variety of ground spices such as cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, black pepper, nutmeg, and cloves, offering the distinctive chai flavor without any caffeine. This blend is prepared simply by mixing the dry spices, which can be stored at room temperature or refrigerated for up to three months. To make a hot chai latte, the mix is stirred into a small amount of water or blended with warmed coconut or other plant-based milk and a sweetener like maple syrup. For iced versions, the powder and sweetener are mixed into a paste, then combined with ice cubes and dairy-free milk. The spices provide a warming, slightly spicy character, while the absence of tea leaves ensures it remains caffeine-free. Adjusting the black pepper quantity allows control over spiciness, and the mix serves as a versatile base for non-caffeinated chai drinks throughout the day.

Ingredients

Servings

MIX

  • 4 Tbsp ground cinnamon (cassia is best)
  • 3 Tbsp ground ginger
  • 4 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 Tbsp black pepper reduce by half for less spice, ground
  • 3/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 3/4 tsp cloves ground

FOR SERVING optional

  • 1-1 1/2 tsp chai mix
  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup (or other sweetener to taste)
  • 1 cup coconut milk or store-bought, homemade or almond milk

Instructions

  1. To make mix, add all spices to a small jar and shake or stir thoroughly to combine. Will keep at room temperature up to 3 months. Or you can store it in the refrigerator if you prefer. Double the recipe if you intend to use it daily (it goes fast!).
  2. To make a HOT chai latte, add suggested amount of Chai Mix, sweetener of choice, and 2 tsp water to a mug (or small blender). Use a spoon to mix spices into water (or skip this step if blending). Then add warmed dairy-free milk of choice to your mug (or blender) and stir (or blend) to combine. The spice mix can settle to the bottom, but blending really helps! Keep a spoon handy to give it a stir when drinking if the spices need to be dispersed.
  3. To make an ICED chai latte, add suggested amount of Chai Mix, sweetener of choice, and 2 tsp water to a serving glass. Use a spoon to mix into a loose paste (you want as few clumps as possible). Then add several big ice cubes and top with dairy-free milk of choice. Stir to combine.
  4. In addition to being used to make chai lattes, we also think it would make a delicious spice mix for cookies, vegetables, smoothies, and more!

Notes

  • Store the chai spice mix in a covered jar at room temperature for up to three months, or refrigerate to maintain freshness longer.
  • Adjust the black pepper amount to reduce spice intensity if desired.
  • For a chai with tea, substitute half the dairy-free milk with strong brewed black tea.
  • Use a blender when combining ingredients to prevent spice sedimentation and improve texture.
