Instructions

Step No.1: Prepare the Apples

  1. Wash and dry apples completely. Remove stems and insert wooden skewers or lollipop sticks into the top of each apple. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly grease it to prevent sticking.

Step No.2: Make the Candy Coating

  1. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.

Step No.3: Heat the Mixture

  1. Increase heat to high and bring to a boil. Do not stir. Allow the mixture to reach 300°F (hard crack stage) on a candy thermometer. This takes about 10-15 minutes.

Step No.4: Add Coloring and Flavor

  1. Remove from heat and carefully stir in black food coloring and optional vanilla or cinnamon extract. Mix until smooth.

Step No.5: Dip the Apples

  1. Working quickly, dip each apple into the candy mixture, twirling to coat evenly. Let excess drip off, then place on the prepared baking sheet.

Step No.6: Cool and Serve

  1. Let apples cool for 20 minutes until the candy shell hardens. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Notes

  • Use a candy thermometer to ensure the correct temperature.
  • Avoid humidity, as moisture can make the coating sticky.
  • For extra spookiness, sprinkle with edible glitter before cooling.
  • Red Poison Apples: Swap black food coloring for red for an evil queen effect.
  • Glitter Apples: Add edible shimmer dust for a magical touch.
  • Spicy Black Apples: Stir in ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper for a fiery kick!
