Breadsticks (Breadtwists)
Description
This recipe begins with a warm yeast dough, combined with sugar and salt for balance. After a brief initial rise, the dough is rolled thin and brushed with a mixture of melted butter and minced garlic. After folding, the dough is cut into strips and twisted to create the characteristic breadtwist shape before a second rise.
Baked at a high temperature until golden brown, these breadsticks develop a slightly crisp crust with a tender, airy crumb inside. A finishing brush of melted butter infused with garlic, kosher salt, basil, oregano, and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese adds extra flavor and moisture to the crust.
The breadsticks are served best warm alongside a homemade or store-bought marinara sauce prepared by sautéing garlic in olive oil and combining it with tomato paste, tomato sauce, and herbs. They make an inviting side for Italian meals or appetizers.
Ingredients
Dough
- 1 ½ cups water warm
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 3 ½ cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
Topping
- ½ cup butter melted and divided
- 2 teaspoons garlic divided, minced
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon basil dried
- 1 teaspoon oregano dried
- ¼ cup Parmesan Cheese grated
Marinara Sauce
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon garlic minced
- 1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste
- 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
- 2 teaspoons basil
- 2 teaspoons oregano
- 2 teaspoons salt or to taste
Instructions
Breadsticks
- In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, mix water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes.
- Add flour and salt. Mix until smooth.
- Cover and let rise for 10 minutes.
- On a floured surface, roll the dough out into a square. The dough should be about ¼-inch thick. Mix ¼ cup butter and 1 teaspoon mixed garlic together. Spread the garlic butter over the whole dough square. Sprinkle with salt.
- Fold the square in half and cut the dough into 1-inch-wide strips with a pizza cutter. Twist each strip and place it on a baking sheet. Let rise for 20 minutes.
- Bake at 400 degrees F for 20 minutes or until golden brown. While the breadsticks are still warm melt the remaining butter and add 1 teaspoon minced garlic, kosher salt, basil, and oregano. Brush the herb butter over the breadsticks and top with Parmesan cheese.
- Serve with marinara, ranch, or Alfredo sauce for dipping.
Marinara Sauce
- For homemade marinara, heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Saute garlic in olive oil. Add tomato paste, tomato sauce, basil, oregano, and salt. Simmer on low for 15 minutes.
