Brown Sugar Sauce for Butternut Squash Ravioli

This Brown Sugar Sauce for Butternut Squash Ravioli combines butter and brown sugar reduced to a thick glaze, enriched with Parmesan cheese and toasted pine nuts for texture. The addition of grated dark chocolate atop the ravioli adds a subtle bittersweet contrast to the sweet-savory sauce, elevating the dish’s flavor complexity and richness.

Description

The sauce preparation begins by melting butter and dissolving brown sugar over medium heat, then simmering until it thickens slightly. Once removed from heat, grated Parmesan and toasted pine nuts are stirred in to meld salty and nutty flavors with the sweet buttery glaze. The butternut squash ravioli is boiled separately and gently coated in this sauce after draining to prevent breaking.

Serving the ravioli with extra Parmesan and freshly grated dark chocolate on top adds a layered complexity. The bitterness of the chocolate offsets the sweetness of the brown sugar while enhancing the richness of the butter and Parmesan. This creates a sophisticated balance suitable as a fall or winter entrée.

Storing leftover ravioli in airtight containers in the refrigerator keeps it fresh for several days, making it convenient for reheating as a prepared meal.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 package butternut squash ravioli I can usually find it at Costco
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese the powdery kind, grated
  • 1/4 cup pine nuts toasted
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate I like Ghiradelli

Instructions

  1. Boil the ravioli. In a seperate sauce pan combine the butter and brown sugar on medium heat til they dissolve together, then simmer until the sauce thickens (it will thin out when you stir in the ravioli).
  2. Remove from heat and add the parmesan and pine nuts. Drain the ravioli and gently stir it in with the sauce.
  3. Place ravioli on individual plates and top with additional parmesan cheese and grated dark chocolate. (The dark chocolate really brings out an amazing flavor to the dish, don't skip this part!)

Notes

  • Store cooked ravioli in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days to maintain freshness.
