Caprese Recipe
Description
The Caprese Recipe arranges ripe heirloom tomato slices with fresh mozzarella rounds, alternating and overlapping them to form a visually appealing pattern. Fresh basil leaves are tucked in between the layers, adding herbal aroma and flavor. Seasoned simply with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, the salad is drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and either balsamic vinegar or a thicker balsamic glaze. This dressing adds subtle acidity and sweetness to the creamy mozzarella and juicy tomatoes. The dish is served immediately to preserve the freshness and texture of the ingredients.
The salad highlights the natural flavor and texture contrast between the soft mozzarella and firm tomatoes, balanced by the brightness of fresh basil and the richness of olive oil. The balsamic vinegar or glaze adds a gentle tang and sweetness.
This dish works well as a light starter or side salad, especially in warm weather or paired with crusty bread. It’s best served fresh without long holding to maintain the vibrant flavors and textures.
Ingredients
- 3 large tomato ripe heirloom, sliced into 1/4" thick rounds
- 12 oz mozzarella sliced into 1/4" thick rounds, ball
- 1 basil fresh, bunch, leaves
- salt Kosher salt and freshly ground
- black pepper Kosher salt and freshly ground
- olive oil extra virgin, for drizzling
- balsamic vinegar or balsamic glaze, for drizzling
Instructions
- Arrange sliced tomatoes and sliced mozzarella on a large plate so that they overlap.
- Tuck the basil leaves in between the layers of tomatoes and Mozzarella, using as much or as little as you'd like. Then, sprinkle a bit of kosher salt and black pepper on top.
- To finish the caprese, drizzle olive oil and balsamic vinegar on top, making sure each slice receives a drizzle. Serve immediately.
