Caprese Salad

Caprese Salad combines fresh sliced tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil leaves dressed simply with olive oil, salt, and black pepper. The salad’s fresh and creamy elements create a light, bright flavor with contrasting textures, ideal as a refreshing appetizer or side dish.

Description

The Caprese Salad features ripe tomatoes sliced to about a quarter-inch thickness paired with similar slices of mozzarella cheese. Fresh basil leaves add aromatic herbal notes. The salad is assembled in layers or stacks, then drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and seasoned with kosher or coarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Its flavor is fresh and mildly sweet from the tomatoes, creamy and mild from the mozzarella, and aromatic from the basil. The coarse salt provides a slight crunch and enhances the ingredients’ natural qualities. The olive oil adds richness and moistens the layers.

This salad is commonly served as a starter or light accompaniment during warm weather, showcasing simple, quality ingredients. Using fresh seasonal tomatoes and high-moisture mozzarella like brine-packed varieties helps maintain the salad’s authentic texture and taste.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 tomato sliced
  • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese sliced
  • basil either whole or sliced chiffonade, fresh leaves
  • 4 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • kosher salt to taste, or coarse flaked sea salt
  • black pepper fresh ground

Instructions

  1. Wash, core and slice the tomatoes about 1/4" thick.
  2. Slice mozzarella about 1/4" thick. Layer tomatoes, basil and mozzarella on a plate. Drizzle each "stack" with olive oil. Season with kosher or sea salt, (coarse, not fine) and fresh cracked black pepper to taste.

Notes

  • Choose the freshest tomatoes and basil available for optimal flavor.
  • Use brine-packed mozzarella rather than low-moisture types to retain moisture and softness.
  • Season with coarse kosher salt or sea salt rather than fine salt to preserve texture.
