Caprese Sandwiches
Description
This sandwich starts with toasted bread slices brushed with extra-virgin olive oil and rubbed with a halved garlic clove for a subtle garlic aroma without raw pungency. Thick slices of fresh mozzarella provide a creamy texture that complements the juicy tomato slices and fragrant basil leaves. Seasoning with salt and black pepper enhances the natural flavors, while balsamic glaze adds a sweet tangy contrast.
The bread's crispness contrasts with the soft mozzarella and ripe tomatoes, creating a balanced bite. Using Italian or sourdough bread adds a sturdy, flavorful base that complements the fresh ingredients. The sandwich is easy to assemble and suits a quick lunch or light meal.
This preparation highlights fresh, wholesome ingredients and simple assembly. The garlic rubbing can be skipped or substituted with a sprinkle of garlic powder if preferred. Choosing whole grain or no-knead bread variations can also work to adjust texture and nutrition.
Ingredients
- 2 lices bread Italian or sourdough is great for this
- 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 garlic cut in half cross-wise, clove
- ½ tomato sliced thickly
- 6-8 basil fresh leaves
- 2-3 mozzarella thick slices, fresh
- 2 teaspoons balsamic glaze
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Toast the bread. As soon as it comes out of the toaster, drizzle each piece evenly with the olive oil on one side and rub the cut side of the garlic clove over the oil.
- Add the tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella to one side of the sandwich.
- Season with salt and pepper and drizzle with the balsamic glaze.
- Place the other piece of bread on top (oiled side facing in), cut in half, and enjoy!
Notes
- Italian or sourdough bread works best, but soft Italian styles or no-knead breads like focaccia are suitable alternatives.
- Rubbing the toasted bread with a fresh garlic clove adds mild garlic aroma, but this step can be omitted or replaced with garlic powder.
- Use fresh mozzarella slices and ripe tomatoes for best flavor and texture.
- Basil leaves should be fresh and added just before serving for optimal flavor and appearance.
