Carrot Oat Applesauce Treats for Dogs and Horses
Description
This recipe mixes oats, unsweetened applesauce, finely grated carrot, and flour to create simple baked treats for dogs and horses. The oats used can be quick, steel-cut, or old-fashioned, with steel-cut oats providing a denser, more attractive texture. The applesauce adds moisture and mild sweetness while carrots contribute flavor and nutrients. The dough is scooped by spoonfuls and dropped onto a parchment-lined tray, then baked until firm.
The finished treats are dry and crunchy enough to hold shape but gentle enough for pets to chew. They make a practical homemade alternative to store-bought treats without additives. The subtle carrot and apple notes give a natural sweetness suited to animals.
These treats should be stored refrigerated and can last up to a week. Growing batches with steel-cut oats provide a more manageable dough texture for shaping, but quick oats may be used for a softer crumb.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup oats (quick for dogs, quick, steel-cut or old-fashioned are fine for horses)
- 1/2 cup applesauce unsweetened
- 1/2 cup carrot finely grated, about 1 large
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and cover a baking tray with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Mix all four ingredients in a medium bowl.
