Dog cake recipe - with dog friendly fluffy frosting!
Description
The Dog Cake recipe includes egg, peanut butter, cooking oil, milk or water, honey or apple sauce, shredded carrot, whole wheat flour, and baking soda, combined to produce a moist cake base. The natural sugars from carrots and peanut butter offer a dog-friendly flavor, while the use of whole wheat flour adds texture. The cake is baked until a toothpick inserted in the center is clean.
The frosting is a whipped mix of boiled potatoes and plain, unsweetened yogurt or water for a light texture resembling human buttercream, but tailored to canine dietary needs. This frosting is spread between cake layers and on the cake’s exterior for a celebration look. It can be kept soft by adding water as needed before application.
Portion sizes should consider the dog's size, health, and digestion. Though designed as a treat, the cake should not replace a balanced dog diet. Substitutions for ingredients like flour or sweeteners are possible to accommodate dietary sensitivities. The recipe notes include nutritional commentary and encourage moderation in serving.
Ingredients
Dog birthday cake:
- 2 egg
- 1/2 cup peanut butter (spread or pure)
- 1/4 cup neutral cooking oil canola, vegetable, generic cooking oil
- 2/3 cup milk or water
- 1/3 cup honey or apple sauce or skip it, or maple syrup
- 2 1/2 cups carrot 2 large, shredded
- 2 cups whole wheat flour or white flour, wholemeal flour
- 2 1/2 tsp baking soda
Dog Friendly Fluffy Frosting (Whipped Potato Yogurt):
- 600 - 700g / 1.2 - 1.4lb potato peeled, cut into chunks
- 3/4 - 1 cup yogurt plain unsweetened or water
Instructions
Cake:
- Preheat oven to 180C/350F (160C fan).
- Grease and line the base of 2 x 20cm/8" cake pans.
- Whisk together eggs, peanut butter, oil, honey and milk (little peanut butter lumps ok).
- Stir in carrots. Then add flour and baking soda, stir until just combined (over mixing = hard cake = sad birthday pooch).
- Divide batter between the cake pans, spread and smooth surface.
- Bake 25 minutes or until skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
- Cool on racks. Frost per below.
Doggie Fluffy Frosting:
- Boil, steam or microwave potato until very soft.
- Whip potato and yoghurt with an electric beater until fluffy and smooth as possible (won't go 100% smooth) - about 1 1/2 minutes on medium speed (speed 5).
- Use water as needed to loosen frosting to soft spreadable consistency (like human buttercream frosting!). Use while warm (it "sets" when it cools).
Frost:
- Spread 1/4 frosting on one cake.
- Top with other cake. Frost tops and sides with remaining frosting, reserving some to pipe decorations if desired (3/4 cup frosting).
Notes
- Use cake pans of similar size; bundt pans or cutting a single cake in half is suitable.
- Adjust serving sizes based on your dog's size, activity, and digestive sensitivity.
- Dog cake treats should not replace a balanced diet, just as human cakes are treats.
- Eggs provide protein; peanut butter offers flavor but watch for fat content and potential allergies.
- Milk can be substituted with water for dogs sensitive to dairy, as the cake is baked.
- Carrots add moisture and nutrition; other vegetables like zucchini or sweet potato may substitute.
- Frosting uses boiled potato and yogurt for a lighter option than peanut butter-based frostings, promoting digestive health.
