Cinnamon Sugar Bread Crust Treats
Description
These Cinnamon Sugar Bread Crust Treats start by cutting stale bread crusts into bite-sized pieces, then tossing them with melted butter to coat evenly. A mixture of sugar and cinnamon is sprinkled over the crusts, which are tossed again to distribute the spices. They are spread out on baking trays and baked at 180°C/350°F until golden brown and crunchy. While still warm, an additional sprinkle of sugar adds a decorative sparkle.
The result is a crunchy snack with a buttery, cinnamon-sweet coating. Using stale bread crusts ensures the butter and spices adhere properly without getting soggy. This recipe is an effective way to minimize bread waste and enjoy a lightly sweet treat that pairs well with coffee or tea.
The crusts bake quickly, with the top rack generally finishing first, so monitoring during baking is advised to achieve even crispness across trays.
Ingredients
- 6 cups bread crust (enough to spread out over 2 baking trays), preferably stale
- 60 g / 2 oz / 4 tbsp butter , melted
- 5 tbsp sugar (separate 1 tbsp)
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180C/350F.
- Cut crusts into 3cm/1.5" pieces.
- Place bread crusts in a large bowl. Drizzle over butter, tossing the bread crusts as you go (with your other hand) to evenly distribute as best as possible.
- Sprinkle over 4 tbsp of sugar and cinnamon, and toss through.
- Spread out over 2 baking trays.
- Bake for 5 to 8 minutes until golden brown and crunchy (check the ones in the middle of the tray). The tray on the top shelf will be ready first. The bottom tray will take a couple of minutes longer.
- While hot, sprinkle over the remaining 1 tbsp of sugar (1/2 tbsp over each tray). This is mainly for appearance purpose.
Notes
- Use stale bread crusts rather than fresh for better butter and sugar absorption and crispness.
- This recipe works well with leftover breads cut into similarly sized sticks or pieces.
- Watch the trays during baking; the top rack usually finishes earlier than the bottom.
