Classic Campari Cocktail - Spritz

The Classic Campari Cocktail, also known as a Spritz, blends bitter Campari with sparkling prosecco and soda water for a refreshingly bitter and effervescent drink. Garnished with fresh slices of strawberries and orange, it delivers a balance of bright fruit notes alongside Campari's herbal bitterness. This cocktail is served over ice, making it light and bubbly, suitable for sipping throughout warm weather or as an aperitif.

Description

This cocktail combines two parts Campari with three parts prosecco and one part soda water poured over ice, creating a bubbly, slightly bitter drink. The fresh strawberry and orange slices add aromatic citrus and sweet fruit flavors that complement the herbal bitterness of the Campari. Stirring these ingredients together achieves a balanced cocktail with moderate alcohol content and refreshing fizz.

The choice of blood or fresh orange slices for garnish enhances the color and adds a mild tang to the drink. Variations on the classic recipe include adjusting the proportions or using complementary liqueurs to soften bitterness or increase fruitiness, allowing customization for different preferences.

This cocktail is commonly enjoyed as a precursor to a meal or as a light refresher during social occasions. The ice and sparkling carbonation keep it cool and lively, highlighting the distinctive flavor of Campari paired with sparkling wine.

Optional modifications include mixing Campari with Aperol, blood orange juice, additional prosecco, or passion fruit liqueur to tailor its bitterness and fruit profile according to taste.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 parts Campari (2oz/60ml)
  • 3 parts prosecco (3oz/90ml)
  • 1 part soda water 1oz/30ml, or sparkling water
  • 2 fresh strawberries , sliced
  • 2 liced orange blood or fresh
  • ice

Instructions

  1. Fill a glass with ice then top with Campari followed but prosecco and sparkling water.
  2. Garnish with slices of fresh strawberries, oranges or fruit of choice.

Notes

  • To reduce bitterness, substitute half of the Campari with Aperol for a milder orange flavor.
  • Adding fresh blood orange juice in place of some Campari adds fruitiness and lowers alcohol strength.
  • Increasing prosecco creates a fizzier and fruitier cocktail with less bitterness.
  • A splash of passion fruit liqueur can add tropical notes and soften the Campari's intensity.
