Nothing beats classic homemade marinara sauce made from scratch with crushed tomatoes, garlic, and fresh basil simmered on the stove. And it doubles as a pizza sauce!

Ingredients
- 2 Tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup grated onion
- 2 cloves minced garlic
- 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano
- 1 bay leaf
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon sugar
- 2 Tablespoons fresh basil chopped
- 1 Tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
Instructions
- In a heavy saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the onion and saute for 5-7 minutes, until translucent and soft.
- Add the garlic and saute for another 30 seconds, until fragrant.
- Add the crushed tomatoes, oregano, bay leaf, salt, pepper and sugar and stir to combine. Reduce heat, cover, and let simmer for 15-20 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in the chopped basil and olive oil. Season with salt & pepper, to taste.
