Copycat Pizza Hut Cheese Sticks Recipe

These cheese sticks replicate the famed Pizza Hut version, made from a yeasted bread dough that rises until doubled for flavor development. Rolled into a rectangular shape and topped with a garlic butter mixture and a blend of Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses, they bake to a golden finish with a chewy interior and slightly crisp edges. This recipe balances soft dough with cheesy topping for a satisfying snack or appetizer served alongside pizza sauce or marinara for dipping.

Description

The Copycat Pizza Hut Cheese Sticks Recipe starts with a yeast dough made from bread flour, water, olive oil, salt, and instant yeast. After activating the yeast and kneading in the flour and salt, the dough rests and rises until doubled, creating a tender but elastic texture. Rolled out with a dusting of semolina flour, which prevents sogginess and adds authentic texture, the dough is brushed with a garlic butter blend before sprinkling on Parmesan and shredded mozzarella cheese. Baking at 350°F yields a golden, lightly crisp-edged bread with melted cheese topping.

The cheese sticks have a balance of softness and slight crunch, with the garlic butter adding savory notes around the edges. Served warm, they pair well with pizza sauce for dipping, making them appropriate as an appetizer or a snack to complement various meals.

For best results, let the dough rise thoroughly to develop flavor and texture, roll it evenly to about ½-inch thickness, and let the cheese sticks rest for a few minutes after baking to set the cheese and prevent sliding. Using semolina flour on the work surface aids in achieving the texture distinctive to Pizza Hut's style.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup water warm
  • 1 1/8 teaspoons instant yeast or 1 package of yeast
  • 1 1/4 cup water at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cups bread flour 22 ounces
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon semolina flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3 tablespoons butter melted
  • 2 tablespoons Parmesan Cheese grated
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • pizza sauce to serve, or marinara sauce

Instructions

  1. Place the warm water and yeast in a medium bowl and briefly whisk together. Allow the yeast a few minutes to bubble up and become active. If the yeast is inactive, you may need to replace the yeast and try again. Add the water and oil to the activated yeast and stir to combine.
  2. Place the flour and salt in the bowl of a food processor and pulse to combine. Add the yeast mixture and process until the dough forms a ball and becomes smooth and elastic. Transfer the dough to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and allow the dough to rise until doubled in size. This should take about 30 to 40 minutes.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray a baking sheet with nonstick spray.
  4. If the dough is sticky, sprinkle your work surface and rolling pin with flour. Also sprinkle semolina flour on the work surface, if desired. Roll out the dough into a rectangular shape and transfer the dough to the prepared baking sheet.
  5. In a small bowl, combine the garlic powder and melted butter. Brush the garlic butter onto the dough. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and top with shredded mozzarella.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cut into slices and serve with your favorite pizza or marinara sauce.

Notes

  • Allow the yeast to fully activate before mixing to ensure proper dough rise for better texture.
  • Use semolina flour on the rolling surface to replicate Pizza Hut's distinctive crust texture and avoid soggy bottoms.
  • Roll dough to about ½-inch thickness for the right balance of soft interior and crisp exterior.
  • Brush the outer edges with egg wash before garlic butter for a golden crust.
  • Rest the cheese sticks 3-5 minutes after baking before cutting to set the cheese.
