  • 4 ounces cream cheese softened (113g)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (480g)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • Food Coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Line large baking sheets with parchment paper or wax paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the cream cheese, butter, and salt together until smooth, about 1 minute. On low speed, gradually add powdered sugar until very thick and a pliable dough forms. Stop and scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Mix in peppermint extract and a drop of food coloring, if using. (For multiple colors, divide the dough, then add food coloring to each one, and knead until the color is even.)
  3. Pinch off small pieces of the dough into ½-teaspoon-sized balls and press the tops with fork tines. Allow to dry on a prepared baking sheet for at least 1 hour or up to 12 hours to fully harden. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

Notes

  • Use softened cream cheese and softened butter. For the smoothest mixing, allow the cream cheese and butter to sit at room temperature for at least 1-2 hours, or until softened.
  • Customize the flavor. This recipe can be made using peppermint oil or extract, vanilla extract, almond extract, or fruity flavors like orange, lemon, and strawberry. Vary the flavor used to match your occasion or theme. To make more than one flavor with the same batch of dough, divide the dough into two or more portions and flavor and color each.
  • Let the mints fully harden. The dough will be soft and pliable; dry the mints on the prepared baking sheets for at least 12 hours to harden before moving to a storage container.

  • Create multiple colors. For multiple colors, divide the dough into a few small bowls and add a drop of coloring to each. Knead the dough until it has a consistent color. Use liquid or gel food coloring.
  • Scale the recipe. This recipe makes a generous amount of mints, about 100, but you can easily scale this recipe up for a bigger party. Most stand mixers will be able to handle at least a double recipe.
  • Make ahead. Homemade cream cheese mints can be stored for up to 1 week in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Make these ahead for a party or holiday to save time the day of your event.
